Enclosures Fabricated from Extrusions

A disadvantage of milling aluminium out of the solid is the high wastage and long machining time, both of which inflate the cost. For higher quantities, milled and/or punched extrusions reduce cost.

An advantage of this approach is that initial prototypes can be milled out of the solid, and the design can be migrated to extrusions for production.

Lightweight extruded case

This is a lightweight rackmount case having sides and front/rear panels fabricated from extrusions, based on a subcontractor's standard extrusions. All holes are punched. Front panel finish is stove enamel with screen printed legend. This method is suitable for small and medium quantities where extreme strength is not required.

Heavy duty rackmount case

This is our own heavy-duty rackmount case, used for high-value products, or for heavier RF systems. Although not obvious from this image, the case is extremely robust, with 10mm thick sides and front/rear panels (The front/rear panel thicknesses are reduced where connectors etc will be fitted). The central horizontal divider carries internal RF modules, and is custom-built for each product.

Although the design is suitable for fabrication with extrusions, the panels are currently milled out of the solid.
